Fierce fall makeup
Now that you’re not constantly sweating off your makeup, have a little fun playing with some of fall 2012’s biggest makeup trends.
As you begin to bundle up in a few additional layers, think about brushing an extra layer of color to your brows.
Bold eyebrows a la Brooke Shields dominated fall runways back in February, and now’s the time to kick your well-defined arch to the curb. If you’re in need of a little help, try patching up sparse spots with a soft pencil liner, such as Lancome Le Crayon Poudre ($25.50, Halls). Gently tap the color into bare spots, and then use the brow brush, attached at the opposite end, to evenly distribute the color.
After you’ve framed your face with substantial brows, get a little Picasso-esque on your eyes. Playful, geometric eyeliner adds whimsy to the end of your eyes — think a bit of a swirl at the end or even a small stem-like drawing. If you’re not that daring, try a longer, more flirty cat eye. This elongates the eye and creates the illusion of longer lashes.
For the best effect, use a liquid eyeliner. Even liquid liner novices can make their way around the Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner Pen ($15, Sephora). Start at the inner corner of your eye and dot the color throughout the baseline of your lashes. Go back, connect the dots and thicken the line for a more dramatic effect. Finish with a swoop up at the outer corner for a sexy cat eye, or get creative with some squiggles and swirls for an on-trend look.
There’s nothing like a dramatic lip to make mouths drop as you enter a room. This fall, “ox blood” is on everyone’s mind. The color — a deep, vampy, burgundy — is not for the faint of heart, but anyone can pull it off with a little precision and lip liner.
For a lighter approach to the trendy color, try a sheer lipstick. It’s easier to apply and gives you a just-bitten look. Vapour Organic Beauty’s Siren Lipstick in Torrid ($22, VapourBeauty.com) offers the high-impact color of the season without the need for all the fuss.
To go bold with your lips — and take a bit more time in the morning — a highly pigmented color, such as Chanel Rouge Allure Luminous Intense Lip Colour in Rouge Noir ($34, Halls) is striking. Beware, though, this is not a color to apply in your rearview mirror at a stoplight! Take your time and, after application, gently line your cupid’s bow with the companion Precision Lip Liner in Rouge Noir ($29, Halls) to define your kisser and keep the color from feathering outside your natural lip line.
While you can take the ox blood trend from your lips to your fingertips, being all matchy-matchy is best left to your kid sister and grandmother. Instead, paint fall’s emerging it-color for nails — navy — onto your short, squoval-shaped digits.
The best blues for fall are muted and nearly-black in hue. However, for a flashier nail in the same color palette, Zoya’s new fall collection includes “Song,” a bold blue enhanced with a metallic sheen ($8, Zoya.com).
If you want to stay true to fall form, you can’t go wrong with classic, strong navy colors such as Chanel's “Blue Satin” ($26, Halls) and SpaRitual's “Undercurrent” ($10, Beauty.com).
Want to inject a little personality into your blue mani? Try jazzing up one finger with a metallic — gold, copper or bronze — for an unexpected contrast. Feeling even more creative? Design the nail using the blue of your choice with accents such as polka dots, lines or a French tip. Just use a fine eyeliner brush or toothpick to apply.
